  The worst meal ever we had in St albans. This is not just about food (awful) and not about service (very poor) and not about hygeine (dirty) - it is about the combination of the three. The only good thing about the place is its garden. We have been warned before by our friends and neighbours and to be honest we have been there before and never impressed, but it was easy, as it is on our doorstep. But today's night really was something else - to add the insult to injury, the restaurant charged us for drinks we never ordered and separatley for the items of set menu, when we disputed - the manager was unbelievable, after a prolonged discussion he admitted that the drinks were overcharged, without any appologies, mind you. Then he refused to charge for soup and fish as part of set menu, but insisted in charging a la carte, as he believed we did not specify stated it was from the set menu. Stay away - dirty, poor food and unbelievable service.

• Best food in town!

  We've been to the Blue Anchor about 5 times now for dinner, the food was surprisingly sophisticated and delicious, not your average pub food, definitely a gastro-pub! Not cheap but very good value for money. The only down side is that the place always seems quite empty, but maybe that's because we tend to go for early dinners, not sure. The service is also excellent, very friendly and attentive. Customer car park, great for Sunday lunch as you can go for a nice walk around the lake afterwards. A must in St Albans!
